Guys, what does this mean?

I have a crush on a guy. We were in a group setting, mingling. There were some new attendees. I overheard him ask a girl her age. (He is 24, she is 16). I am wondering if this could be normal small talk (she does look a tad younger)... or if this is him guaging her age because there might have been some interest towards her on his part? Sorry for lack of more info... but based on this, what do you think?!
