Why do cattle noses freeze? And why do they suffocate? Is there no connection between esophagus and trachea?

Cattle noses usually freeze long after the tips of ears, the feet, and the tail. Suffocation can come from being buried in snow, from ingesting roots etc. than can become lodged in the esophagus causing pressure on the trachea and causing materials to back up and go into the lungs.
